D’You Know What I Mean?

Oasis

Lyrics

[Intro]

[Verse 1]
Step off the train all alone at dawn
Back into the hole where I was born
The sun in the sky never raised an eye to me
There's blood on the tracks and they must be mine
The fool on the hill and I feel fine
Don't look back 'cause you know what you might see
Look into the wall of my mind's eye
I think I know, but I don't know why
The questions are the answers you might need
Coming in a mess, going out in style
I ain't good looking but I'm someone's child
No one can give me the air that's mine to breathe

[Bridge 1]
I met my maker, I made him cry
And on my shoulder he asked me why
His people won't fly through the storm
I said "Listen up man, they don't even know you're born"

[Chorus 1]
All my people right here, right now
D'you know what I mean? (yeah, yeah)
All my people right here, right now
D'you know what I mean? (yeah, yeah)
All my people right here, right now
D'you know what I mean? (yeah, yeah)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
[Verse 2]
I don't really care for what you believe
So open up your fist or you won't receive
The thoughts and the words of every man you'll need
So get up off the floor and believe in life
No-ones ever gonna ever ask you twice
Get on the bus and bring it on home to me

[Bridge 2]
I met my maker I made him cry (yes you did)
And on my shoulder he asked me why
His people won't fly through the storm
I said "Listen up man, they don't even know you're born"

[Chorus 2]
All my people right here, right now
They know what I mean (yeah, yeah)
All my people right here, right now
They know what I mean (yeah, yeah)
All my people right here, right now
They know what I mean (yeah, yeah)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

All my people right here, right now
D'you know what I mean? (yeah, yeah)
All my people right here, right now
D'you know what I mean? (yeah, yeah)
All my people right here, right now
D'you know what I mean? (yeah, yeah)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Oasis is considered one of the most influential bands of the 1990s. The band was formed in Manchester, England, in 1991 by Liam Gallagher (vocals) and Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs (guitar). The band was later joined by Liam's brother, Noel Gallagher (guitar and vocals), Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan (bass) and Alan White (drums).

Oasis produced some of the greatest Britpop anthems of all time including “Wonderwall,” “Champagne Supernova,” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger.” One of their earliest songs, “D’You Know What I Mean?,” is a six-minute rock and roll triumph that samples “Straight Outta Compton” by N.W.A. Released in July 1997, it was the lead single from the band’s third album, Be Here Now.

About D’You Know What I Mean?

“D’You Know What I Mean?” is a powerful song that opens with a long and haunting instrumental introduction, which fades into a guitar riff. The guitar riff repeats itself throughout the song. Liam Gallagher sings his heart out on the track, and his voice drips with swagger and attitude. The opening lines of the lyrics serve as a warning to listeners, “Step off the train all alone at dawn/Back into the hole where I was born.”

“D’You Know What I Mean?” is a song that reflects the band’s aggressive sound, a departure from their earlier, more melodic material. Noel Gallagher said it himself: “Our first two albums had a sweetness about them; they were rooted in our love of the Beatles. Be Here Now is different because it’s big, it’s more abrasive, it’s more industrial.”

The song contains samples from “Walk This Land” by The Christ Messenger and “In the Summertime” by Mungo Jerry. The main riff is taken from a song by The Rutles, a Beatles parody band. However, the most famous sample used in the song is the opening drum loop, which was taken from “Straight Outta Compton” by N.W.A.

Many critics have praised “D’You Know What I Mean?” for its powerful sound and dark lyrics. The song was a commercial success, reaching #1 on the UK Singles Chart and #8 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in the United States. In the UK, the single sold over 200,000 copies in its first week, making it the fastest-selling single in UK chart history at the time.

The song’s music video, directed by Dom and Nic, features several striking images, including a helicopter being shot down and a group of fans being sucked into “the hole where I was born” as mentioned in the lyrics. The video was reportedly the most expensive music video ever made at the time, with a budget of over £1 million.

“D’You Know What I Mean?” is a definitive Oasis song, one that shows the band’s power and intensity. The song still stands the test of time and continues to be a fan favorite all over the world.

If you’re looking for a song that embodies rock and roll, then “D’You Know What I Mean?” is the song for you. It’s a song that demands to be played loud and to be felt in your bones. It’s a song that captures the spirit and attitude of Oasis, one of the greatest bands of all time.
