Alex G is a Philadelphia born, American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose real name is Alex Giannascoli. With a fan base that he accumulated through self-releasing music online, Alex G has become one of the most respected indie musicians of recent years. After releasing his earlier works through Bandcamp, he eventually signed with Domino Records and has since released several critically-acclaimed albums under his belt.

About Alex G

Alex G is proof that you can make it to the top no matter how you start out. Born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia, he started making music as a teenager. His music initially gained popularity through platforms such as Bandcamp, where fans discovered his unique style, his DIY approach and real tales of life in the Philadelphia suburbs.

Alex G’s early songs were bedroom-based experiments, a blend of quirky indie-folk and lo-fi guitar rock that he built around his laconic voice. His sound often incorporates unexpected sounds, such as backwards loops, playroom instruments, found sounds, and distorted samples.

DSU, Alex G’s first album that was not self-published, dropped in June 2014 through Orchid Tapes. The album immediately caught the attention of the critics and music journalists alike for its inventive, eclectic influences. Rolling Stone named it one of the top 40 country albums of 2014, despite it not being a country album.

After the release of DSU, Alex G toured in North America and Europe. In 2015, he signed with Domino Recording Company, and began to work on his second album. Released in October 2015, Alex G’s second album, Beach Music, showcased a more mature and nuanced sound. His vocals had become stronger, and the instrumentation was more complex, with a wide range of instruments used throughout the album.

Alex G’s third album, Rocket (2017) was an experimental masterpiece that blended pop, rock, country, folk, and electronic sounds. Listening to this album, you get the sense of an artist who is unapologetic about his identity and style, with a strong-willed desire to create music that challenges the norm.

Alex G’s latest studio album, House of Sugar, was released in 2019. This album showed a departure from the lo-fi sound that he had become known for in the early part of his music career. The album is more polished, complex, and sophisticated and it's delightfully unpredictable.

While Alex G’s music genre is difficult to define, his style is distinct – a blend of rock, pop, folk, punk, country, and experimental sounds, woven together in an intricate web of soundscapes. At a quick listen, his music seems to be a simple Indie-pop extravaganza, but a deeper listen will reveal that it is much more complex than that. Alex G’s musical universe is one of infinite depth, richness, and creativity and is a testament to his dedication to his craft.

In April 2017, Alex G decided to adopt the (Sandy) Alex G moniker in order to avoid confusion with another female artist named Alex G. According to an interview he gave to Vice, his decision was due to the fact that he wanted to avoid more comparisons to the other artist who shared his name. He changed his stage name back to Alex G in mid-2020, shortly after the other artist changed her name to Alex Blue.
