Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas was born on October 13, 1980, in Glen Cove, New York. She is of African-American and Puerto Rican descent and grew up in a musical family. Her mother, Tina Douglas, was a former dance teacher, and her father, Ken-Kaide Thomas Douglas, was a singer and manager of a local gospel group. Her grandfather, James, was a civil rights activist who marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
