After New Edition’s iconic album, Heart Break, was released in 1988, the band decided to take a break. But, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe remained active and formed Bell Biv DeVoe in 1989. The group's debut album, Bell Biv DeVoe, produced two hit singles, “Do Me!” and “Poison,” which helped the album reach the Top 5 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Bell Biv DeVoe's style was different from New Edition's, as they incorporated more hip-hop and funk elements into their music. The trio's name is a combination of each member's name, and their sound, which is a fusion of R&B, hip-hop, and pop. Their music has managed to stand the test of time and continues to be played on radio stations across the world.
