Eminem is a legendary hip-hop icon who started as an underground battle rapper in Detroit, Michigan. He has been one of the most influential forces in the hip-hop industry for over two decades. He developed a career full of controversy, wild swings, and some of the most noteworthy bars in the history of the genre.

About Eminem

Eminem, born Marshall Bruce Mathers III on October 17, 1972, is a rapper, songwriter, and record producer from Detroit, Michigan. He is widely considered as one of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time. Eminem started his career as a teenager by performing at rap battles in his hometown of Detroit. He eventually gained recognition when he released his debut album, Infinite, in 1996. However, it was his second release, The Slim Shady LP, which brought him mainstream success when it was released in 1999.

Eminem's style of rapping is unique, as he is known for his complex rhyme schemes, intricate wordplay, and highly personal lyrics. Throughout his career, he has tackled topics such as drug addiction, family issues, and societal problems.

Eminem has broken countless barriers, shifting and impacting the culture in several ways. In June 2017, “Stan” was added to the Oxford Dictionary, and in 2019, to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. He was the first rapper to win the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album for three consecutive albums. “Rap God” set the Guinness World Record for the most words in a song. Moreover, his albums The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show became certified Diamond by the RIAA in 2011, making him one of the few artists to have more than one Diamond album.

Em’s albums are known for their controversial lyrics, which have often landed him in hot water with various groups and has led to scathing criticism from the media. However, his fans have remained fiercely loyal despite the media’s backlash. His emotional and personal lyrics have gained him a massive following, and his fans called “stans” remain some of the most loyal fans in the industry.

Eminem invested himself farther than ever into this new emotional style with 2017’s Revival, which included lyrics about his place in hip-hop, as well as modern issues including President Donald Trump. Despite the serious direction, many were turned off to the album due to its heavy Rock-sampling, with many considering it one of, if not his weakest project.

Following the controversy surrounding Revival and criticism of his modern style, Eminem surprise-released Kamikaze on August 31, 2018, responding to critics of Revival and his career overall. The album was much more well-received than his previous effort and went on to be the highest-selling rap album of 2018. This album cemented Eminem’s place as one of the greatest rappers of all time.

Once again, by surprise, Eminem released Music to Be Murdered By on January 17, 2020, marking his first full-length project for the new decade. The album, similar to 2018’s Kamikaze, includes fast-paced rapping and heavy rhyming. The album’s cover is a reference to Sir Alfred Hitchcock and his 1958 record of the same name, Music to Be Murdered By. In December 2020, Em released Music to Be Murdered By: Side B. This deluxe edition includes 16 new tracks that were not on the original tracklist.

Eminem founded Shady Records in 1999 after the success of The Slim Shady LP and served as the label’s president along with his manager, Paul Rosenberg. Shady Records has since signed a number of successful acts, including 50 Cent, Obie Trice, and Slaughterhouse.

One of Eminem's most remarkable contributions to the hip-hop industry was the establishment of D12, a group consisting of Eminem and his closest friends. In addition to D12, Eminem has also collaborated with a number of other high-profile artists, including Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, and Beyoncé.
