Genesis is an iconic English rock band that formed in 1967 at Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey. The band initially comprised five pupils, including Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, and Anthony Phillips, who were discovered by former pupil Jonathan King, known for his pop hits. Genesis is regarded for their eclectic sound that traverses different genres, including folk music, progressive rock, and pop.

About Genesis

Genesis has had many incarnations throughout their storied career. The most commercially successful version of the band includes keyboardist Tony Banks, guitarist Mike Rutherford, and drummer/singer Phil Collins. Genesis' early music is steeped in folk music, transitioning to progressive rock in the 1970s, and later moving towards pop. Their music has become known for its elaborate compositions, complex musical arrangements, and theatrical performances.

Peter Gabriel was the lead vocalist of the band from the onset until 1975. During Gabriel's tenure, the band's live performances became renowned for his elaborate costumes and makeup, including the infamous fox-mask and red dress that graced the cover of their 1972 album 'Foxtrot'.

When Gabriel left in 1975 to embark on his solo career, drummer Phil Collins stepped into the lead vocalist role. With Collins' addition, Genesis' sound continued to evolve, becoming increasingly focused on pop music. Collins' solo success throughout the 1980s did not detract from the success of Genesis as a band, bringing accolades for the other band members.

Genesis' discography features 15 studio albums, six live albums, and numerous award wins and nominations, including a Grammy for Best Concept Music Video with "Land of Confusion." Of their successful albums, their self-titled album 'Genesis' (1983), 'Abacab' (1981), 'Duke' (1980), 'Invisible Touch' (1987), and 'We Can't Dance' (1991) are some of their most iconic. 'Invisible Touch,' which includes hits like "Invisible Touch" and "Land of Confusion," spent three consecutive weeks at number one on the charts.

Genesis' success cannot be overemphasized as they were one of the most influential bands of their era. They were known for their elaborate live performances that captivated audiences around the world. The band inspired a horde of tribute bands that aim to recreate their iconic performances.

Currently, Genesis comprises three members; Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, and Phil Collins. They last performed together in 2007 on their 'Turn It On Again' tour, marking their first live performance together in 15 years. The band announced their recent comeback for their 2021 'The Last Domino?' tour, where they will perform new music alongside their iconic hits.

In 2010, Genesis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a fitting accolade for the band's impact on music and culture worldwide.
