Benson began her career in the theater industry where she was a member of the original Broadway casts of classic shows such as Smile and Crazy for You. She also had the opportunity to work with the legendary composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, taking on the role of Nancy in his musical, Oliver!.

Benson also lent her voice to other beloved animated characters such as Thumbelina in the 1994 film of the same name, Weebo in Flubber, and Lady in Rover Dangerfield.
