With her smooth vocals and relatable lyrics, Kehlani has captured the hearts of fans around the world. Her music career has had its share of ups and downs, but Kehlani has never lost sight of her passion for music.

About Kehlani

Kehlani Parrish, more commonly known by her stage name Kehlani, was born on April 24, 1995, in Oakland, California. She grew up in the Bay Area and was raised mainly by her aunt after her father passed away when she was young. Kehlani was inspired by artists like Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu when she was young and began writing songs at the age of 14.

In 2011, Kehlani appeared on the sixth season of the popular television show America’s Got Talent as part of the group Poplyfe. The group made it to the finals but ultimately lost to Landau Murphy Jr. Despite the loss, the show helped give Kehlani a platform to launch her music career.

After leaving Poplyfe, Kehlani struggled with her solo career due to contractual issues. She released her debut solo project, Cloud 19, in 2014, which flew largely under the radar. It wasn't until her sophomore mixtape, You Should Be Here, was released in 2015, featuring influential artists like Chance The Rapper and BJ The Chicago Kid, that Kehlani received national attention. The mixtape earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album in 2016, which helped cement her status as a rising talent in the R&B world.

Shortly after the success of You Should Be Here, Kehlani began working on her debut studio album, SweetSexySavage, which was released in 2017. The album was well-received by fans and critics alike and solidified Kehlani's place as one of the most promising young artists in the industry.

In 2019, Kehlani released her third mixtape, While We Wait, which served as a precursor for her highly anticipated sophomore album, It Was Good Until It Wasn't, which was released in May 2020. With songs like "Toxic" and "Can I," Kehlani continued to showcase her prowess as a talented vocalist and songwriter.

Throughout her career, Kehlani has been open about her struggles with mental health and personal relationships, often using her music as a vehicle for self-expression and healing. Her music is a blend of R&B, soul, and hip-hop, with lyrics that explore themes of love, heartbreak, and resilience.

Outside of her music career, Kehlani has also been an advocate for social justice issues, using her platform to support causes like Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ+ rights. She has called for greater inclusivity and diversity in the music industry and has been a role model for young fans looking to use their voices and platforms to effect positive change.
