Formed in the early 1990s, Xscape quickly rose to fame as one of the most successful R&B groups of the decade. Hailing from Atlanta, they were the first act signed to producer Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def label. With their powerful vocals, relatable lyrics, and a unique blend of hip-hop and R&B, Xscape captivated audiences around the world. Comprised of Kandi Burruss, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, and sisters LaTocha and Tamika Scott, the group showcased their immense talent through three platinum albums and five top 10 pop singles.
About Xscape
Xscape's rise to stardom began when they caught the attention of Jermaine Dupri at an Atlanta talent show while they were still in high school. Impressed by their vocal abilities, Dupri wasted no time in signing them to his So So Def label, setting the stage for their incredible journey in the music industry.
Their debut album, "Hummin' Comin' At Cha," was released in 1993 and became an instant hit. The lead single, "Just Kickin' It," dominated the R&B charts for four weeks and reached the impressive position of number two on the Billboard Hot 100. It remains their biggest hit to date and solidified Xscape as one of the hottest groups in the music scene.
Continuing their success, Xscape's second album, "Off The Hook," showcased their growth and evolution as not only vocalists but also as songwriters. The group took charge and co-wrote many of the tracks on the album, demonstrating their creative prowess. The lead single, "Feels So Good," further proved their popularity, reaching number eight on the R&B chart.
But it was the cover of The Jones Girls' 1979 track, "Who Can I Run To," that catapulted Xscape to new heights. This iconic rendition hit number one on the R&B chart and number eight on the Hot 100, solidifying Xscape's position as a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. The album's third single, a double A-side featuring "Can't Hang" and "Do You Want To," further showcased their range and reached number nine on the R&B chart.
In collaboration with MC Lyte, Xscape contributed their powerful vocals to the single "Keep On, Keepin' On," which became MC Lyte's biggest hit and reached number 10 on the Hot 100. Demonstrating their versatility, Xscape also teamed up with Keith Sweat protégés Ol Skool for the song "Am I Dreaming," which became a top five R&B hit.
By 1998, Xscape had released their third and final platinum album, "Traces Of My Lipstick." The lead single, "The Arms Of The One Who Loves You," reached number four on the R&B chart and number seven on the pop chart, further solidifying their success. The second single, "My Little Secret," peaked at number two on the R&B chart and number nine on the Hot 100, showcasing Xscape's continued reign in the industry.
Although the group took a hiatus in the late '90s to pursue solo endeavors, they briefly reunited in 2000 to collaborate with Lil' Bow Wow on his debut single "Bounce With Me." The track became a number one R&B hit and reminded the world of Xscape's incredible talent.
Despite their undeniable success, Xscape disbanded in 2001. A reunion without Kandi Burruss was attempted in 2005, with the addition of new member Kiesha Miles, but unfortunately, their planned album "Unchained" was never released.
